Nikon Corporation is a Japanese company producing photographic and optical equipment, such as consumer digital cameras and industrial optical machines and tools. Nikon distributes its products worldwide.

Consumer impact summary[edit | edit source]

In 2023 Nikon regulated second-hand sale of at least one of its camera lenses in online auctions to certain regions. There appear to be no news articles about similar incidents since then but there appears to be no official statement on the matter from Nikon.

Incidents[edit | edit source]

  • Nikon blocked sale of a used lens on Ebay (2023): A Nikon camera lens, not in production anymore, was prevented from being sold second-hand on Ebay upon request from Nikon Corporation.[1]
  • In the past, Nikon has on multiple occasions[2][3][4] shipped firmware updates that cause third party batteries that previously worked in those cameras to cease to function without warning. Nikon service centers routinely install any available Firmware updates during a repair without consulting the customer first. It is true that using third party batteries indeed carries certain risks that are not immediately obvious. Some third party manufacturers cut costs by using resistors instead of more expensive thermistors, which disables the overheating protection during charging, and the third party electronics in the battery may not allow for the camera to ensure that the last photo or video being recorded at the precise moment the power cuts out due to the battery being depleted, increasing the chance of file and memory card corruption. However, this move by Nikon undermines the freedom of choice of the customer and can cause significant damage for professionals if they suddenly find themselves on a job without usable spare batteries, even if they went out of their way to choose perfect quality ones.
