Founded in 1899, Miele is a German manufacturer of domestic appliances and commercial equipment.
Proprietary smart-home ecosystem
Miele appliances are equipped with online functionality, and protocols used for managing those appliances are proprietary. No Matter integration is provided although Miele is part of CSA.[1],
Instead Miele offers its own protocol which is difficult to set up, needs a Miele Developer Account[2] and is only practical for technically experienced users.
Miele devices do not offer any official local API and instead require a connection to Miele's cloud service for any form of integration or app control to work. However, recent efforts of the MieleRESTServer project seem to have had success in controlling some devices via the local network through unofficial means.
Miele app incident
With Version 4.0 released in 2021, the Miele companion app had suddenly lost critical advertised features[3] such as:
- The washing assistant
- The ability to view the remaining detergent in washing machines.
These functions came back slowly in 2022 after lots of negative feedback from users.
Forced updates
A user on X has reported that their dishwasher refuses to start unless the user run an update which the device has found after being connected to a WiFi.[4]
